Every year, the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) brings us the latest news and projections in the world of video games. The annual trade fair is held at the Los Angeles Convention Center and presented by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). Many video game publishers and manufacturers use this large-scale event to announce new game titles and other game-related merchandise. Basically, it’s a BFD in the video game industry.
This year’s E3 just wrapped up last week and I have to say, it was one of the best in years. Yes, it was full of a lot of the same old – same old, but we also saw some new announcements that made it worth the wait.
We saw some evidence of advancements in virtual and augmented reality (yet how close we are to having this streamlined for the totally immersive gaming experience is yet to be seen), some releases of new and old titles alike, announcements of some games previously presumed dead, a big focus on diversity and much more.
E3 is in the business of bringing is the future (of video games, that is). So what are some of the biggest and most exciting game reveals of this year’s expo? Here’s one of my favorite compilation videos, courtesy of IGN.
45 Biggest Games of E3 2015:
It can sometimes be difficult to pick out common themes at mega-conferences like this but if I had to create one overall theme of E3 2015, it would be diversity.
We saw diversity in the games and announcements from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, as well as from the third-party shows. We see a variety of games and playstyles on all the platforms and we also experienced diversity in another way: through the pleasant amount of female presence both on stage and in the games themselves.
Personally, I’m looking forward to Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst and Star Wars: Battlefront and here’s hopiong they live up to the hype. Speaking of hype…
No matter how excited you are about new games, expansions and any other E3 news, you have to remember there is an incredible amount of hype at these things. In fact, E3 is the King of Video Game Hype. The entire point of E3 is to hype up the new games and other releases so people will buy them.
It’s all about getting the gamers excited so they’re waiting to proclaim, “Shut up and take my money!”
Hype Train! Choo-Choo!
BEN “YAHTZEE” CROSHAW has his own take on this year’s expo and with his usual sarcastic wit gives us a recap.
Yahtzee is a British-born, currently Australian-based writer and gamer with a sweet hat and a chip on his shoulder. When he isn’t talking very fast into a headset mic he also designs freeware adventure games and writes novels. His personal site is www.fullyramblomatic.com.
So there are a few brief thoughts on E3 2015. There was an incredible sense of excitement and energy this year and I hope that translates into the upcoming game releases as well. What was your favovrite announcement from E3 2015?
