Looking for something different for your tweens and teens this summer? I have five kids of my own so I know how tough it can be to keep them entertained over the summer months. Tweens and teens can be tough when it comes to summer enrichment opportunities. They’re too old for many summer programs, and their attention span and ennui makes finding something interesting and engaging particularly difficult.
What about wizard school?
It’s a safe bet they’ve never been to wizard school for a week, where they can not only have a blast casting spells and meeting magical creatures, but they can also learn real-world skills that will help them survive adolescence.
Consent-based play is very powerful. Roleplaying allows a person to grow within themselves, stretch the boundaries of their norms and learn a great about themselves, as well as other. Roleplaying inspires empathy and imagination. These are skills that young people who participate in roleplaying will take with them into their daily lives. It builds confidence, hones public speaking skills, and encourages you to think outside the box in this and other situations.
Magischola Prep is perfect for anyone interested in the magical world and roleplaying/LARPing. It’s not your typical summer camp, that’s for sure.
Who: Rising 6th-12th graders from around the US and world

Where: Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania
Registration: Magischola Prep
Magischola Prep is a week-long residential enrichment camp for middle- and high-schoolers, ages 11-17. Unlike traditional summer camps, with archery, canoeing, and hikes, Magischola Prep immerses your student in the theatrical experience of going to Wizard School for the week. The camp is designed and staffed by experienced educators and is fully certified for both safety and fun so you don’t have to worry when your children are here.
You can live as a wizard for an entire week. You’ll join or be sorted into one of the Four Courts and play a part in that Court’s traditions and rites. You can wear a wizard robe and tie in your Court’s colors. You will compete for the Providence Court Cup by earning/losing house points, attend a Wizard Ball, play magical sports, join clubs that match your interests and most important of all, make new friends and form bonds with fellow wizards that can last a lifetime.
Want to find out which Court you’d be in? Check out the Court Sort. This series of questions will help you determine what kind of person you are and which Court best suits you. It’s a lot of fun! If you’re curious, I got the Bradford Court.
“You have been sorted into Bradford Court! You love to dedicate yourself to the pursuit of knowledge, and are quite happy spending most of your time in the library. You know that careful planning and being prepared will get you through any trouble. You are a seeker of deeper truths, and are unlikely to be satisfied with simple answers. If you can’t find what you need in a book, you’ll find a bigger library–or you’ll write your own book!”
There is plenty to do with clubs, classes sports, excursions, evening activities and more. See a sample daily schedule here.
If you’ve never RPed or LARPed before, check out these sample character sheets to get an idea of how it works. This is an excellent opportunity for young people to expand their horizons but it’s more than just good fun and pretend magic.
In this video, you can hear the creators of New World Magischola, Maury Brown and Ben Morrow, speak about the real-world issues that attendees will face as part of their experience. They also talk about how the fictional world was created and the importance of inclusivity, diversity, equality, autonomy and, respect.
The camp is great for kids who are avid readers, into comics, anime, fandoms, creative writing, and theatre, and also great to meet other kids with similar interests.
BONUS: I have even more great news! The founders of Magischolaprep have been kind enough to give my readers (that’s YOU) a special discount for signing up. When you go to register, just put the code CafMil100 in at checkout and you can save $100 off the price of entry.
So, what are you waiting for? This is the best thing you’ll ever do for your kids. Give them an experience they will never forget. You might even create the foundation for a love of roleplaying that they continue with after Magischola Prep.
