One person you’ve probably heard in anime, even if you didn’t know it, is Sonny Strait. He has been in the entertainment field for years, with his most notable roles in anime being Krillin from Dragon Ball Z, Usopp from One Piece, and Lt. Col. Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist. Those are some impressive anime credits already, but on top of that, he has also been the voice of Neptune in Smite, the titular hero of S’plosion Man, and, as the press release announcing his visit to Otakon 2016 indicated, “the psychos in Borderlands.” Strait must get quite the vocal workout!
What I did not know is that Strait also has a very distinguished career in illustration. The press release from Otakorp notes that he has published seventeen works as a comic book artist and has illustrated for the comic book Elfquest, which has been running for thirty years. He wrote and illustrated his own graphic novel, We Shadows, in 2007, which was nominated for Best Graphic Novel the following year. Strait has more than two decades of experience in illustration. I am not surprised; when he appeared at Otakon a few years ago, he did a quick drawing of Krillin for me and signed it. How cool is that?
Strait has also sat in the director’s seat for anime titles. He directed Maria the Virgin Witch, Prison School, and, most recently, the new dub for The Vision of Escaflowne, where he will also portray Allen Schezar alongside Caitlin Glass as Hitomi. Strait is, from my recollection, a really fun guy and I am thoroughly amazed at his artistic talent. If you’re curious, like me, about some of his works, you can check out his DeviantArt page and be just as wowed at his oeuvre as I am (and, if you are also joining us down at Otakon, I recommend you read Con Rules). You can also find out more information about him on his personal website, Sonnystrait.com.
If you want to see him in action, riffing mindlessly with DBZ co-star Sean Schemmel (Goku), check out this video:
