Video games have some of the best music found anywhere in the entertainment industry. Sometimes the music in a video game is so good, you just want to keep your game playing so you can hear it for a little bit longer. It’s no surprise that soundtracks have now been made of great gaming music. Even non-gamers can enjoy and appreciate the sound of great video game music.
So after talking about this with a friend, we each tried to list our top five games with the best music and it was then I realized this was not such an easy task.
Trying to choose only five video games with the best music of all time is difficult since there are so many that I love but here are some that have stuck with me the most over the years.
Super Mario Brothers for the NES – A true remembrance of my childhood, Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was the first console video game I ever played. Super Mario Bros had classic music that entertained and stuck in your head all day. I remember playing at night, sleeping, going to school the next day and still hearing the Mario music in my head.
Final Fantasy VI (SNES) – The entire Final Fantasy franchise is known for great music but my favorite by far is Final Fantasy VI: Dark World. The entire game is full of great music but Dark World really captures the emotion of the entire game. It’s almost chilling, and dark, in a sense and it always reminds me of the very emotional scene in the game when that song comes on. The whole game is full of great music and that song tops my list.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64) was well known for a variety of things but its remarkable use of music really put in on the map. The ocarina, a flute-like instrument, was virtually unheard of to most people before this game which launched its popularity with a whole new audience. It was an important part of the storyline and its powers could help you teleport across space and time. The music was great and the interesting way in which the instrument was woven into the storyline was priceless.
Chrono Cross: Time’s Scar (PlayStation) – Chrono Cross has music I can fall asleep to. It’s much like the way ocean waves are soothing to other people. Time’s Scar is my favorite and it’s actually better for waking up to rather than falling asleep because when the violin frenzy kicks in, I know it’s time to get up and start my day. In fact, there are many great pieces in Chrono Cross; enough to make the whole soundtrack worth it even if you don’t like the game.
Halo 3 (Xbox 360) – It’s not just RPGs who steal the show in video game music. The main theme of Halo 3 is absolutely beautiful. You don’t have to be a fan of the game or of any games, in fact, to love the music. I’ve played it before and had video game haters comment on how much they love it and ask me what it is. You should see their faces when I tell them.
Listing the best music in video games can be hard when there are so many great titles and soundtracks to choose from. Here are some of my favorites. What are yours?
