Exercises to Help with Back Pain

Back pain can literally get you down. Since I’ve worked a desk job for about 18 years now as a full time writer, I know a thing or two about back pain. I try to help prevent it by moving every hour on the hour (I set an alarm to remind me) and I do stretches at my desk. A great chair and desk that provide back support are also important. I also walk daily, but especially as I got older, I still found I was suffering from bad back pain. I’m a healthy weight and I’m active. Still, back pain was killing me, especially in my lower back. I had to learn some other things to do to make it better. My friend suggested maybe doing some more sport like softball, he got some new fastpitch bats recently. I might give it a good with him, but I digress.

While you first want to rule out the obvious issues of a medical reason for back pain, a poor mattress, etc. then you may want to look into some exercises to help with back pain. Yoga is great for back pain and there are also many yoga poses to help ease back pain in all areas of the back. Mine is usually focused in my lower back, but I also carry stress in my shoulders so sometimes it hurts there, too. I know a lot of friends who also struggle with back pain and have even taken a look at using physiotherapy to help. They even asked me to check out a website like http://www.ckphysio.co.uk/ but I just don’t have the time, which is why I think doing these easy exercises will be incredibly helpful.

So, how does exercise help with this? Back exercise stretches the lower back muscles to help bring relief to back pain caused by over-stressed back muscles. Spine rehabilitation is also done through back exercise. People suffering from back pain are put through an exercise regimen, as exercise stretches the back and promotes better blood circulation in the area. All you need to do is learn the right exercises to help with this and how to do them correctly and you will be all set.

You will hear many people complain of back pain occasionally. About 75% to 85% of the people experience back pain at some point of time in their life. The most common area of back pain is the lumbar region of the spine. This is the region that bears most of the body weight. Sudden twisting and bending can cause injury to the back. Back pain also occurs when the muscles get stiff because of poor posture. Back exercise stretches the stiff muscles to provide relief.

With that in mind, what kinds of exercises can you do? That’s a great question and I’m going to go over a few for you, but you can take it upon yourself to look up more. You can find free exercises for your back everywhere online. There are even sites that have videos and show you exactly how to do it. YouTube is a great place to go and I even use my FitBit app and website to help me find exercises. I can send them to my FitBit Blaze (more about this awesome device in another post) and get my exercises right on my wristwatch. How cool is that?

Back Exercise Stretches – For Back Pain Relief

Back exercise stretches need to be performed softly. You should treat your back gently and not subject it jerky and violent movement. This is why yoga is a very popular choice. The exercise routine that you follow should start gently, and gradually build over a period of a few weeks. You could cause more harm than good, if you do not follow expert advice in matters of back exercise. Always ask your doctor if you are healthy enough to start a new exercise routine if you have any concerns. Also, if you have a history of back injury, consult your physician before you start doing back exercises on your own at home. For some people, it might be helpful to listen to music while exercising. It can help mitigate the pain if you aren’t focusing on it. My friend loves to listen to his Custom Headphones while he works out. From what he tells me, they are great!

Warm up your body before you embark on the stretching routine. Exercise stretches the muscles, ligaments and tendons in the area surrounding the back. The muscles and tendons associated with the spine are designed for movement. Hence, they need to be stretched everyday to perform optimally. The hamstring muscles are an important factor in back pain problems. Most people with back pain have stiff hamstring muscles.

Stand comfortably with your feet shoulder width apart. Now slowly bend forward and try to touch your toes with your hands without bending your knees. Your action should be smooth and not jerky. Be careful not to overdo the stretching part. Stop when you feel pain. This exercise stretches your hamstring muscles. Your back pain will improve gradually, as you continue with the exercise. The exercise can also be performed while lying down.
